Three-way wall switches are most commonly used to control a light fixture from two locations, such as from both ends of a hallway or stairway. Three-way switches allow for controlling a light fixture from two separate locations, these are usually used at the top and bottom of a flight of stairs or at two different entrances to a room. The black "hot" wire enters the switch on the left.
Each three-way switch has two hot terminals, like a conventional switch, as well as an extra terminal that connects it to the other switch.
